Backend Web Developer

The Role

Graphite are looking for a backend developer to join our team in Brighton. Developing in our technical team, you’ll be also be able to assist with project architecture decisions.

You will be involved in all aspects of back-end across our projects including on CMS (Drupal) projects as appropriate. You’ll be keen to keep up with latest developments in the industry, and you’ll also have aspirations in your career development - looking to constantly improve and learn as you go. You’ll have used at least one major framework in a commercial context, and you’ll be able to appraise its suitability for projects. We currently deliver using PHP and .NET Core, although you'll also get the opportunity to work on serverless projects which may require a drop into JavaScript/similar.

You’re open to discussing alternative approaches to deliver the right output using the right components, rather than being wedded to a single tool. You’ll ideally have had experience with producing accompanying concise documentation where required. You'll also be aware of the benefits of component-led thinking - resulting in the minimisation and management of technical debt.


  • Developing new features and resolving issues in new and existing projects
  • Creating accompanying technical documentation
  • Highlighting potential opportunities for technical improvement
  • Assist with technology selections where the opportunity arises
  • Working closely with our design and Client Services team to deliver high-quality work that delights our customers


  • Experience with the Laravel PHP framework, or a similar-sized major PHP framework
  • Knowledge and ideally some experience of testing and mocking tools - phpunit, Behat, Mockery and similar are all good examples
  • Proven past experience working on multiple projects concurrently
  • An understanding of design and the importance of a great user experience.
  • Experience working with performance optimisation of new and existing sites, taking a pragmatic approach as required
  • Experience of contribution to the architecture and implementation design of projects
  • Excellent communication skills, feeding back regularly to the Technical Director and other team members as required, with warmth and positivity
  • Comfortable using Git version control

Advantageous skills and experience:

  • An understanding and application experience of SOLID, DRY and other similar code design principles
  • Some experience with delivering on Amazon Web Services products
  • Experience with working on Drupal 8 projects
  • Experience with the .NET Core MVC framework

£30,000 to £45,000 a year (Depending on level/experience)
